You must always plan the transition when introducing your cat to new food. Cats are sensitive to changes in diet, so a sudden change could bring about temporary digestive issues or they may simply refuse to eat the new food. Therefore, it is important that you gradually introduce the new cat food over a period of 7 to 10 days. Start by mixing 75% of the old food with 25% of the new food and then gradually reduce the percentage of old food while increasing the quantity of new food until the transition is complete.
You should know how much your cat weighs. This is the first point of reference in determining the right amount of food. As a general rule, we suggest the following quantity:
One tin of food (156 g) per day for an adult cat that weighs 6 lb (2.72 kg). Add half a tin (78 g) per day for each additional 5 lb (2.26 kg) of body weight. Make sure that your cat always has access to clean, fresh water.
Despite these guidelines, the amount of food you should give to your cat depends on several factors: their activity level, age, breed and the environment in which they are living. If your cat seems to be gaining or losing weight, you should adjust the amount of food and, if this does not resolve the issue (especially if they are eating the same amount of food every day), contact your veterinarian.
Once you have opened a tin of cat food, you must cover the tin or transfer the food to an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for no longer than three days. Any wet food that has been left at room temperature and not been refrigerated must be thrown out after two hours.
